We are very fortunate to have an area in our own back yard that has just been awarded its own AVA, which stands for American Viticulture Area. There were 193 AVAs as of February, 2009 and the Lake Chelan AVA is the 11th in the State of Washington and the State’s second in 2009. Prior to the installation of the AVA system, wine appellations of origin in the United States were designated based on state or county boundaries. An American Viticulture Area (AVA) is a federally recognized grape growing area, historic-ally recognized and having soil and growing conditions unique to the surrounding area. Come join us for our annual picnic at this wonderful winery located on the shore of the Columbia River. Rio Vista is the only winery on the river in North Central Washington where you can arrive by car, by boat or float plane! They don’t have a dock, but there is a long stretch of sandy beach with a shade hut, floats, or trees to tie up to. Besides the wonderful food and company, you’re able to enjoy a tour of the riverside vineyards, the park-like country setting, a walk on the sandy beach, a visit with the Ducks and Chickens, or simply sip the fantastic reds and whites on the covered deck of the tasting room while lingering in the golden glow of the river.

The vineyards of Dr. Steve Elerding consistently produce grapes sought after by major winemakers in Washington. Wineglass Cellars, Matthews Cellars, Austin Robaire, Chateau Faire le Pont, Januik are just a few. We will be comparing wines from different winemakers whose grapes all came from the Elerding Vineyards.

This is the time of year when I wish we had settled in Wenatchee or Cashmere when we came here almost twenty-one years ago. While I am happy with where we live, I do get frustrated with the late arrival of spring each year. Out the front door, by the walk, three crocuses, some snowdrops and a pansy have managed to make it through the only recently melted snow. The lilac and spirea are putting out tiny tentative leaves and buds. (more…)
